James Webb Space Telescope

The James Webb Space Telescope is an infrared space observatory developed jointly by NASA, ESA, and CSA. Launched in 2021, it observes the universe from near the Sun–Earth L2 point.
In 2025, K2-18b's atmosphere seemed to show dimethyl sulfide — a gas only Earth's marine life produces — hailed as a possible sign of alien life. Independent reanalyses later found the signal was statistical noise, not a real biosignature.

The James Webb Space Telescope has found mature galaxies only a few hundred million years after the Big Bang. Such objects appear earlier than standard cosmology expected, so astronomers are rechecking how fast galaxies could grow in the young universe.
