A religion and system of thought founded on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama in India around the 5th century BCE, concerned with the causes of suffering and the path beyond it.
The world's oldest firm was Kongō Gumi, a Japanese temple builder founded in 578 AD. A Baekje artisan built Japan's first Buddhist temple at Prince Shōtoku's request, and it raised temples for 1,400+ years over 40 generations — until a 2006 takeover ended its run.

In Buddhism, Avalokitesvara (觀世音) was shortened to Guanyin (觀音) due to Tang dynasty Emperor Taizong (李世民). Under Chinas name taboo custom, the character 世 from the emperors name could not be used publicly. This practice also renamed government offices, influencing Korea.
