SMS
Short for Short Message Service, a standard for exchanging brief text messages over mobile networks. It formed the basis of early mobile texting and influenced later messaging technologies.
The 160-character limit of SMS did not come only from hardware limits. In 1985, Friedhelm Hillebrand studied postcards and telexes and found most fit near 152 characters. He argued 160 was enough, and the length entered communication standards.
