Hyperbolic paraboloid
A hyperbolic paraboloid is a saddle-shaped quadric surface that curves in opposite directions. Although curved, it can be generated by two families of straight lines, making it useful in architecture and structural design.
Pringles' saddle shape isn't just stylish — it's a 'hyperbolic paraboloid', a double-curved surface engineered so cracks can't spread through the thin chip, and stacking force spreads evenly instead of shattering it. The shape was patented in the 1970s.
