Der Ring des Nibelungen
Der Ring des Nibelungen is a cycle of four music dramas with text and music by Richard Wagner. Drawing on Germanic and Norse mythology, the complete cycle was first performed at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus in 1876.
The image of Vikings in horned helmets is a myth—no excavated Viking helmet has horns. It spread from the 1876 premiere of Richard Wagner's opera the Ring cycle, when designer Carl Emil Doepler added horns to the male helmets.
