Death penalty
A punishment in which the state deprives a convicted offender of life through legal process. Many countries have abolished it or halted executions, and retentionist states generally reserve it for the gravest crimes.
The last time France used the guillotine was 1977. On September 10, murderer Hamida Djandoubi was executed in Marseille, the last guillotine beheading recorded in the Western world. France abolished the death penalty only in 1981.
