When drought or harsh cold sets in, some snails seal their shell with a hardened mucus membrane called an epiphragm and stay dormant up to three years, halting metabolism to conserve moisture. Their normal sleep is odd too: 12-14 hours asleep, up to 41 hours awake per cycle.
