Procedural generation
Procedural generation is the creation of content through algorithms and rules rather than by designing every result manually. It is used in games to produce varied terrain, levels, objects, music, and other content.
In 18th-century Europe, the 'musical dice game' (Musikalisches Würfelspiel) was a fad: roll dice to chain written bars into procedurally generated music. 'KV 516f', attributed to Mozart, can produce about 1.3×10^29 pieces.
