A legal right that lets the author of a creative work such as literature, music, art, or software control its copying, distribution, and derivative use. Once the term of protection expires, the work passes into the public domain.
Streetwear label Supreme's red box logo is lifted almost directly from artist Barbara Kruger's 1980s collage style of white Futura text on red backgrounds. In 2013, Supreme sued a small brand for parodying its own logo — and Kruger publicly mocked the irony.

The first New Oxford American Dictionary carried 'esquivalience', a word for 'the willful avoidance of official responsibilities'. An editor invented it as a trap for copyists. Dictionary.com copied it and got caught. Such planted fakes are called a 'mountweazel'.
