In May 2024 an impact carved a fresh crater on the Moon's near side, bigger than the Roman Colosseum — yet no telescope on Earth caught it happening. It sat unnoticed in NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter image archive until spotted by chance in August 2025.
